Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation - MCTI/ Brazil The event is proposed as an action of the South by South Seaside initiative - The initiative is dedicated to exploring, sharing and giving visibility to Global South knowledge and experiences, with a focus on those that advance the intersection of science and policy, enhance Ocean Literacy, and facilitate knowledge exchange in support of the UN Ocean Decade. International collaboration and co-creation is an integral part of the initiative.The event is dedicated to exploring and sharing insights from Global South experiences related to initiatives that advance the intersection of science and policy,, and facilitate knowledge exchange in support of the UN Ocean Decade, through Ocean Science and Literacy. This event catalyzes international and cross-sector collaboration and co-creation aimed at addressing key challenges, while promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within ocean-related affairs, in the LAC region.
The event will serve multiple purposes by (1) convening representatives from LAC States, including National Decade Committees, to showcase local success stories in the implementation of UN Ocean Decade actions, projects, and programs; (2) integrating inclusive and diverse perspectives on ocean initiatives, including cultural and artistic approaches; and (3) opening venues for facilitating thematic discussions and collaboration on pertinent topics. It will offer diverse perspectives from various Global South initiatives, covering areas such as early-career ocean professionals, gender balance, ocean literacy, ocean observation.
It follows on the success of the
South by South Seaside Sessions @ Ocean Literacy Dialogues 5th edition, during the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference and by highlighting successful initiatives and stories from Global South countries, the event will help to demonstrate their tangible efforts and commitments to the Ocean Decade.
Its main focus is on SDG 14: Life below water, however, due to its goal of addressing the key challenges in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within ocean-related affairs, the following SDGs are also linked: Goal 4: Quality education, Goal 5: Gender equality, Goal 10: Reduced inequality, and Goal 17: Partnerships for the goals.
